Visit Historic Places in Kenya

Kenya is a great place for a vacation if you like historical sites. The Portuguese settled in Kenya for a time along the coast and were envolved in trading. They were always being attacked by the Omani Arabs so they finally left. You can visit the Gede ruins that were once a Swahili town.

The history of Kenya goes back many centuries.  Islam came to the coast in the 9th century and for next 5 centuries, a large trading business developed along the coast.  In 1505, the Portuguese captured Mombassa but they left in 1720 after many battles with the Omani Arabs.

In 1593, the Portuguese built Fort Jesus on a coral reef at the entrance to the harbor.  The fort was built to protect the Portuguese that were living on the East Coast of Africa.  No fort experienced the hostilities that Fort  Jesus went through.  From 1696 to 1698, the Omani Arabs attacked Fort Jesus.

From 1837 to 1895, the fort was used as a barracks for soldiers.  When the British took over in 1895, the Fort was made into a prison and in 1962, it was made into a museum.  The fort is now a historical landmark and is open to visitors.

The Gede ruins were once a Swahili town and are typical for most towns along the East African Coast.  The town and walls were rebuilt in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Many people lived here, the town became wealthy, and it reached its peak in the fifteenth century.  The ruins consist of mosques, a palace and many houses.  In the last half of the seventh century, the last families left town.  Gede is now a national park and museum.

You can visit the Mnarani ruins in Kilifi District.  Mnarani overlooks Kilifi creek.  The ruins are made up of two Mosques and several tombs.  Mnarani was first occupied in the early 14th century but the first mosque was not built until 1425.  There was major reconstruction efforts made in the 15th century after the first building collapsed.

It is believed the Galla destroyed Mnarani in the early 17th century.  Mnarani is well worth a visit.

The Darin Blixen Museum belongs to a different time in Kenya history.  The museum is located on what was a farm at the base of the Ngong Hills.  The farmhouse was made famous by the Oscar winning movie “Out of Africa” which was based on Karen Blixen's life

The museum was built in 1912 and was bought buy Karen and her husband in 1917.  It became a farmhouse for their 4,500 acre farm, which had 600 acres of coffee.

The museum is open everyday with guided tours that are great.  The museum shop has handicraft posters, postcards and other items for sale.

The Lord Egerton Castle was built between 1930 and 1940 and is located west of Nakurn.  Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton England owned the castle.

The Lord Egerton Castleis a 4 story building with 52 rooms, is made of stone, and is built in a classical Victorian style and is a very interesting place to visit.
