Obudu Mountain Resort: Heaven in Africa

Obudu Mountain Resort, a place everybody should try to be.

Formerly known as Obudu Cattle Ranch, the Obudu Mountain Resort is located on a plateau about 1,576 metres above the sea level at Northern part of Cross River State of Nigeria. The resort was established in 1949 by a Scottish rancher, McCaughley who camped on the mountain for one month. In 1951, in the company of Hugh Jones and Crawfeild, the ranch was developed.

The Obudu Mountain resort is about 332 kilometres from Calabar, the people’s paradise. The resort has the temperate climate equivalent to some regions in Europe. The temperature ranges from 26®C to 32®C between November and January and four®C and 10®C between June and September. These features make the resort a suitable holiday camp to fun seekers all over the world.

The resort has world-class water park with state-of-the-art swimming facilities for children, teens and adults. The hilltop can be accessed by either the road or by a cable-car. The hilltop offers the opportunity to view the country-side. More so, this offers another opportunity to have a good knowledge of Africa from a serene environment.

Accommodation in the resort is never a problem. The visitors have the benefit of choosing from the options of over 160 categories of accommodation. The accommodations available at the resort include standard rooms, executive rooms, presidential apartments, huts and chalets. The resort boasts of enough spaces for any kind of occasion. Driving into the resort is a fun of its own. The 10 kilometres have 22 bends. As a result, the-state-of-the-art cable car is made available for those who may not find it easy to drive. The cable car carries eight people and covering a distance of about four kilometers in the sky.

Obudu Mountain Resort has played host to some world leaders and this serves as an open invitation to anybody that wishes to enjoy the beauty of Africa. Recently, President Goodluck Jonathan chose to spend his holidays in the resort. This is an indication that the resort is capable of hosting any world leader at any time.

Furthermore, the Obudu Mountain hosts an annual mountain race on November. This competition attracts athletes and visitors all over the world. As a result of this, other things being equal, the best period of visiting the mountain resort is between October and February. This serves as a systematic invitation to people all over the world to come and behold the beauty of Africa in Nigeria.

However, the Obudu Mountain Resort has not been receiving the level of patronage it deserves. Many Nigerians and Africans are not really aware of this haven. This is a challenge to the media houses who have not done much to explore the potentials of Nigeria in the area of tourism. This is a mistake that requires immediate correction. Apart from the stream of incomes enjoyed by the Cross River State government and the citizens from the resort, the resort can also play the role of correcting the negative impressions people have about Nigeria. Indeed, by drawing millions of people to Obudu on annual basis, a platform to expose the culture of the people will be presented and the great delicacies of Cross River will be embraced internationally.

Finally, the ultimate aim of this work is to draw tourists to Obudu. Write me: lordpercyo@aol.com
